Abbey of Thoronet

Abbey of Thoronet

Abbey of Thoronet: one of the ‘Three Sisters of Provence’, former Cistercian abbey located in the peaceful Var region.

The Abbey of Thoronet is located in the peaceful Var region and it is one of the most important Cistercian abbeys in Provence.
Founded in 1146, the Abbey of Thoronet reached its greatest development in  XIII century and it is one of the best example of Cistercian original art with an extremely simple and sober architecture and its austere magnificence.
The Abbey of Thoronet was restored in XIX century by architect Revoil and his successor Formigé but works are still underway. This is the reason why visitors are not allowed in some parts of the building.
